What's AYP all about, anyway?

Education Sector has published a new "explainer" -- this one's on AYP. It's a PDF document, and you might think you could just print it and give it out to parents, reporters, etc. Be warned: the "explainer" is full of technical language and a good bit of jargon.

I calculated two different readability indices -- the Flesch-Kincaid index put it at 19th grade level and the SMOG index put it at 16th. The Flesch Reading Ease score was a 9 -- single digit scores tend to be dense legal documents. (Comics tend to score in the 90s.)

So, it's not a handout and it's not for everyone. But it's out there, it explains the various components of AYP measures, and it does explain why there are state differences in calculating AYP. If you are blessed with excellent reading skills, we'd recommend it.
