Charters Don't Outscore Other Schools in Study

Students at charter schools, on average, performed no better than students at traditional public schools -- and they often did worse -- according to a national study by the Economic Policy Institute. And contrary to the claims of charter school proponents, the lower math and reading test scores cannot be explained by students' socioeconomic status, the report found. Many charter advocates denounced the institute's study.
The study found:
Some state reports said charter-school students made larger academic gains than students in traditional public schools, but most studies did not reach that conclusion.
Charter-school teachers are less likely to be certified and typically have less experience than teachers at traditional schools.
