Ruby Payne: Is what she says true?

For years, there have been some rumblings about the generalizations Ruby Payne makes about people living in poverty, but they have mostly been in higher education circles, not in the K-12 schools that are trained in Payne's Framework for Understanding Poverty.

The recent AERA conference highlighted some reviews of Payne's framework. If you want to read about this in plain language, the Washington Post's article defines the issues in a balanced manner.

For a more academic review and a lot of articles on the debate over Payne's framework, check out the Teachers College Record. (The link goes to an issue that has lots of articles on this topic, though it is covered in other issues as well.)
