Alternative Ed issues on the first day of session
Well! The Governor highlighted dropout prevention right at the front of his State of the State address and proposed an increase in alternative education funding. A pretty good start to the 2007 legislative session. We'll be watching for the details of the dropout prevention initiative and will report any news here on the blog.
We stopped in on the first meeting of the House Common Education Subcommittee yesterday because HB 1457 dealt with student suspensions. Well, this bill doesn't change any of the rules about suspension from school. It was written to clarify one particular issue: whether administrators can suspend students from school activities without suspending them from school. HB 1457 will make it clear that suspension from activities only is permitted. That's all it does. Next stop for this bill: The full House Education Committee.
