Music Resouce....and Contest Info!

So many of our alternative programs struggle to find resources for teaching fine arts....and while they are struggling, teachers forget that music is an art!

Most adolescents love music (at least one genre, anyhow), so it just makes sense to put some focus there. That's why our first webquest contest for Oklahoma alternative education programs is one that integrates algebra and music. [Update: This won't be our first webcast (due to some technical difficulties.) But it's a great resource, just the same.]

But I'm getting ahead of myself. In looking over the webquest materials, we found a great resource that I wanted to mention here on the blog. It is a free resource for free web-based sheet music, music lessons, music theory instruction, and other music links.

See www.otac.info/otacmain for more information on the webquest contests. We'll be having a series of these this year and next year. The webquests meet a lot of needs:

  • encouraging cross-curriculum teaching and learning (all will be directly related to PASS)
  • buiding student research skills
  • increasing work readiness: how to work in teams to accomplish goals
  • engaging students
  • building a sense of community among Oklahoma's alternative ed teachers and students
  • creating a positive outlet for students' creativity
  • .....and providing a way in which teachers can earn points for their bleeping HOUSSE forms
So, if you're in alternative ed in Oklahoma, watch our web page for contest announcements. If you're not, take advantage of the great free music resource that we found in the process of putting this together.
