America: Still the land of opportunity?

The Center on Children and Famlies at the Brookings Institution has issued a new review of the research on the attainability of the "American Dream." Does every child in America have an equal shot at success? Is America still the land of opportunity? International studies suggest that children born into poor families in the United States have a smaller chance of rising out of poverty than their counterparts in many other nations.

As noted in the paper's abstract, the report... "reviews the evidence on intergenerational mobility and the role of education in enabling less advantaged children to move up the economic ladder. It concludes that, in many respects, the U.S. education system tends to reinforce rather than compensate for differences in family background."

It's not long, and it's important. Read it here: Opportunity in America: The Role of Education
